John Coltrane

Meditations was released in 1965. It features Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders as soloists, both playing tenor saxaphones. Much of the recording features extensive passages in free rhythm and extended saxophone techniques such as honked and overblown notes, as well as multiphonics. Alternative versions of tracks 2-5 had been recorded in September 1965 by the same musicians minus Sanders and Ali.

Meditations is about cleaning the mirror into the self, going as far through
the looking glass as is possible each time.
Making music as naked as the self can be brought to be.

-Nat Hentoff (1966 original liner notes to Meditations, A-9110)

The City On Film

The City on Film is the official name of Bob Nanna's solo act. He began solo recordings in 1997 during the off-time between Braid tours. The City on Film's sound is generally lighter, slower, and more cerebral than that of either Braid or Hey Mercedes. There are several lyrical connections and similarities across all three acts. This set includes a couple Braid songs and a couple Hey Mercedes songs.

Fourth Of July

The root of all Fourth Of July songs is singer/songwriter Brendan Hangauer playing alone with a nylon-stringed guitar. Awash in a love of Dylan, Townes and Kitty Wells (as much as Silver Jews, Papa M and Palace), Hangauer’s songs are full of intimate interactions, cutting observations and dreamy, heartfelt candor. They’re grainy, personal films pulled off with a natural director’s touch. But as soon as they’re brought to the band, which includes Hangauer’s brothers Partick (bass) and Kelly (keys/trumpet) as well as fellow singer Adrianne Verhoeven (former The Anniversary), guitarist Steve Swyers and drummer Brian Costello, the songs explode into amplified urgency and bold, bright heartland-pop.

Piglet

A three-piece instrumental band from Chicago, Piglet craft manic and hyperbolic orchestrated jams that the discerning listener would expect from such a storied city. Having cut their teeth in the clubs and bars of their native lakeside city, the trio capitalizes on the power afforded by Chicago’s monsters of rock and infuses it into their unique song writing approach, resulting in a style of music that they can sincerely call their own. With two members of Seyarse you know these kids are no strangers to complicated, mind-bending song structures.

Kitty Party

Kitty Party is a small band consisting of 4 guys who hang out a lot together and generally like being around each other and other people. They wish secretly and overtly that more people were in the band, but really hate the idea of rounding up more people to practice so they keep it to the current roster of Tyler, Jason, and Dave.( Recently, they made Josh so mad that he agreed to play bass, albeit loudly.) Jason is of Jason Choi and the Sea, Dave was of Look Mexico

Lights Out Asia

Lights Out Asia is an ambient musical project that was formed in February 2003 when Chris Schafer and Mike Ystad, themselves members of Aurore Rien, had considered to work on music together. Over the next few years, they would begin to record in various places. From bedrooms, basements, to living rooms and outdoors, the duo had finally written and mastered enough material for a full length album. This is their second.

Creta Bourzia

Pittsburgh math rockers Creta Bourzia followed most obviously in the footsteps of local heroes Don Cabellero but added vocals and a stronger metal influence to their forebears' explosive, dissonant prog-punk. Creta Bourzia's roots lay in the early-'90s Pittsburgh band Liquid Brick, which dissolved and watched its members move on to other groups. Eventually, three core musicians -- vocalist/guitarist Jason Jouver, guitarist Jeff Ellsworth, and drummer Dennis Kern -- reunited under the Creta Bourzia banner, and brought in bassist Simon Clark for their first album, the locally released Memories of Earth. Clark later departed, and the band added producer/engineer Andy Wright on bass and extra percussion, as well as auxiliary keyboardist Justin Rathell. Both contributed heavily to the band's second album 1002. Most members went on to form the new Don Caballero.

Lickgoldensky

The second full length from Philadelphia's LGS. Not wanting to repeat themselves, gone are the snotty, obnoxious, pretentious fits of songs. Instead of songs blazing by in a whirlwind of drums and distorted everything, they have taken on a more refined tone. A new chapter for LGS that ranges from Hoover styled guitar lines, to Mars Volta rhythms, and still manage to keep the overtly heaviness of Neurosis, and The Melvins. Electronic interludes between songs keep the eleven song disc moving with out stopping once. Acoustic guitars, drum machines, guitar solos, piano, and everything in-between make an appearance here.

Glös

It all started as a few musical file transfers from laptop to laptop in a van while touring Europe as the band Engine Down, and ended as a full-blown album of musical compositions by means of the internet from opposite corners of America. Glös started as Keeley Davis (former frontman of Engine Down and bass/synth player for Denali) and Cornbread Compton (former drummer of Engine Down, Biology, and currently Heavens). After collaborating on over 20 songs and having never physically played the songs together in a rehearsal environment, the duo decided to take even more advantage of the freedom that this style of writing offered. They invited Keeley's sister Maura Davis (former frontwoman of Denali) to join the project and to add her beautiful, sultry vocals to the songs that already seemed perfect for her.

Tortoise’s almost entirely instrumental music defies easy categorization, and the group gained significant attention from their early career. Tortoise was among the first American indie rock bands to incorporate styles closer to Krautrock, dub, minimalism, electronica and various jazz styles, rather than the standard rock and roll and punk that had dominated indie rock for years.

A rock band that was first conceived by Caleb Scofield during 2006. He was joined by Santos Montano for the band's first release, "Harmonic Tremors" in 2007. Sonically, Zozobra bears a lot in common with the experimental-hardcore of Old Man Gloom (a project in which both of its members are involved) and symbolically shares a synonymous name; at the same time Zozobra is more hard rock than metal. Rosetta

The Galilean Satellites was the first album from Philadelphia's Rosetta. Over the span of 2 discs you get slow build ups to massive sludge metal parts and then calm ambient parts. Disc one is definitely the heavier of the two being mostly post metal heaviness and disc two gives much more of a abstract ambient feeling. This two disc album is actually three because you can play the two discs at the same time to create a third composition. For fans of ISIS, Mouth Of THe Architect, and Pelican.

Tornavalanche

As five human animals indigenous to the planet earth, Bob, Dan, Joel, Whitney and Zach have harnessed the intense power of the TORNAVALANCHE. As a contemporary rock combo, they use their instrumentation to emulate sheer power of the tornado and the avalanche. As a material event, this combo reminds us of a young Richard “Ringo” STARkey, as his hard ass drumming in Rorey and the Hurricanes followed the meteorological patterns of a devastating hurricane. This devastation eventually projected Rorey and the Hurricanes to the top of the Liverpool rock scene, and gave Ringo the confidence to form his own combo called the Beatles in 1974. Make no mistake friends, the correlation between TORNAVALANCHE and Ringo Starr is not some 3rd rate Philosophy 101 postulation. It is founded deeply in their harnessing of natural world for their own material use. Watch the skies my friends, a TORNAVALANCHE is on the horizon, and once experienced, you will never be the same.

Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Forstella Ford is once again one of the hardest working bands in independent music. Relentless touring and songwriting have left them with a loyal following that spans three continents and with their new lease on life, they show absolutely no sign of slowing down.

“El Ten Eleven’s dense, textured instrumentals recall post-rock standard-bearers like Tortoise or the Mercury Program, except theirs are created by only two musicians — and a whole lot of effects pedals.” - LA Times.

Auto!Automatic!!

I think they said it best
"Auto!Automatic!! is comprised of three friends who honestly enjoy playing music together as much as they enjoy a party in the parking lot of the Skate Park of Tampa. Alex Fedele commands the drum kit, while Nate Murray completes the rhythm section with bass lines that drive and anchor each song in place. Brian Larsen crafts innovative, finger-tapped guitar lines that exist metaphysically, weaving in and around the solid rhythm. Together, the band naturally combines left-field time changes and did-you-just-hear-that-man? I-mean-really-did-you-just HEAR-THAT? musicianship with straight forward head bobbin‘ rock’n’roll and melodic hooks that capture everyone’s attention."

Lali Puna

Lali Puna is a band from Weilheim, Germany usually thrown into the music genre of 'indietronic' which at times can sound like Asobi Seksu. The Lali Puna sound is a sophisticated, complex mélange of classic pop motifs, pulsing electronic rhythms, and sleek European styling. Another great band to just relax to.

Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone

I first came across Mary Halvorson's guitar work when I was in Brooklyn last March and was given the amazing opportunity to see her jazz trio at The Stone. For those of you who don't know, The Stone is a not-for-profit venue in the East Village set up by John Zorn (yeah THE John Zorn) for experimental and avant-garde artists. Tyshawn Sorey was sitting in on drums and apparently had learned all the songs that were played that night in a day. If you have the chance to see him play, don't pass it up. He has got to be one of the best drummers I have ever seen. The Mary Halvorson Trio also has an upcoming release on Firehouse 12 Records. This release "Prairies" is performed by Mary Halvorson (Guitar) and Jessica Pavone (Viola). Best described as avant-garde chamber music. This is their first release, The second On And Off (2007) can be bought here.

"The American prairie sound rebuilt with modernity is how the Brooklyn duo of guitarist Mary Halvorson and violist Jessica Pavone describe the stylistic basis of their debut album Prairies. Halvorson's guitar is an expressive beast, wit
h a repertoire of moods that shift effortlessly from funky John Lee Hooker twangs to cerebral harmonics. Pavone's viola must also be two-headed: her recklessly exposed melodic monodies are met the other way with ornate decoration."

Owl City

Owl City offers perfect combinations of laid-back, relaxing "feel-good" music amidst the polite nod to the golden "pre-adolescent" 1980's days when New Wave ruled the music realm. The music reminds me of Ben Gibbard playing electronic dream pop but that shouldn't take away from Adam Young's own beautifully crafted relaxing pop songs that are sure to put you in a good mood.
