Creta Bourzia

Pittsburgh math rockers Creta Bourzia followed most obviously in the footsteps of local heroes Don Cabellero but added vocals and a stronger metal influence to their forebears' explosive, dissonant prog-punk. Creta Bourzia's roots lay in the early-'90s Pittsburgh band Liquid Brick, which dissolved and watched its members move on to other groups. Eventually, three core musicians -- vocalist/guitarist Jason Jouver, guitarist Jeff Ellsworth, and drummer Dennis Kern -- reunited under the Creta Bourzia banner, and brought in bassist Simon Clark for their first album, the locally released Memories of Earth. Clark later departed, and the band added producer/engineer Andy Wright on bass and extra percussion, as well as auxiliary keyboardist Justin Rathell. Both contributed heavily to the band's second album 1002. Most members went on to form the new Don Caballero.

Kitchens & Bathrooms

The American debut of Hamilton, Ontario's Kitchens + Bathrooms. Math rock with style and melody. Incredibly well crafted songs that are intense and catchy at the same time. (released 2003) All the songs flow together really well, to the point of not really being able to distinguish one song from the next, even though there are no tie-ins from other songs on this entire album.

Tortoise

Tortoise’s almost entirely instrumental music defies easy categorization, and the group gained significant attention from their early career. The members have roots in Chicago’s fertile music scene, playing in various indie rock and punk groups. Tortoise was among the first American indie rock bands to incorporate styles closer to Krautrock, dub, minimalism, electronica and various jazz styles, rather than the standard rock and roll and punk that had dominated indie rock for years.

Sleeping People

Born at the crack of the year 2002, San Diego's Sleeping People began as some sort of razor-sharp punk prog-metal trio - two guitars and drums, and too much energy to safely contain. In 2003 they added Kenseth Thibideau (our proverbial 'everyman' that also plays in Howard Hello and Pinback) on bass. It would prove to be a perfect match. Like they were meant to be together from the start, the band scrapped all of their original songs and started over as a much more intense four-piece. Taking a variety of classic and contemporary influences, they speed it up, fuck it up, and serve it up. And you'll love it. This is their newest full lenghth
