The City On Film

The City on Film is the official name of Bob Nanna's solo act. He began solo recordings in 1997 during the off-time between Braid tours. The City on Film's sound is generally lighter, slower, and more cerebral than that of either Braid or Hey Mercedes. There are several lyrical connections and similarities across all three acts. This set includes a couple Braid songs and a couple Hey Mercedes songs.

Fourth Of July

The root of all Fourth Of July songs is singer/songwriter Brendan Hangauer playing alone with a nylon-stringed guitar. Awash in a love of Dylan, Townes and Kitty Wells (as much as Silver Jews, Papa M and Palace), Hangauer’s songs are full of intimate interactions, cutting observations and dreamy, heartfelt candor. They’re grainy, personal films pulled off with a natural director’s touch. But as soon as they’re brought to the band, which includes Hangauer’s brothers Partick (bass) and Kelly (keys/trumpet) as well as fellow singer Adrianne Verhoeven (former The Anniversary), guitarist Steve Swyers and drummer Brian Costello, the songs explode into amplified urgency and bold, bright heartland-pop.

Creta Bourzia

Pittsburgh math rockers Creta Bourzia followed most obviously in the footsteps of local heroes Don Cabellero but added vocals and a stronger metal influence to their forebears' explosive, dissonant prog-punk. Creta Bourzia's roots lay in the early-'90s Pittsburgh band Liquid Brick, which dissolved and watched its members move on to other groups. Eventually, three core musicians -- vocalist/guitarist Jason Jouver, guitarist Jeff Ellsworth, and drummer Dennis Kern -- reunited under the Creta Bourzia banner, and brought in bassist Simon Clark for their first album, the locally released Memories of Earth. Clark later departed, and the band added producer/engineer Andy Wright on bass and extra percussion, as well as auxiliary keyboardist Justin Rathell. Both contributed heavily to the band's second album 1002. Most members went on to form the new Don Caballero.

Kitchens & Bathrooms

The American debut of Hamilton, Ontario's Kitchens + Bathrooms. Math rock with style and melody. Incredibly well crafted songs that are intense and catchy at the same time. (released 2003) All the songs flow together really well, to the point of not really being able to distinguish one song from the next, even though there are no tie-ins from other songs on this entire album.

Troubled Hubble

Proof that relentless good cheer, mountains of hard work, and a knack for pop hooks don’t always lead to disappointment, shattered dreams, and office jobs: Troubled Hubble, the band you’ve never heard of but that will soon be making you as jitteringly happy as they are. Maybe they already are. Imagine the very best elements of Tripping Daisy, Weezer, Built to Spill, the New Pornographers, the Weakerthans, and Jets to Brazil, and you’ll have barely touched the surface of this remarkable band.

The Swell Season

The 2006 album by Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová. The title of the album as well as of the song The Swell Season is inspired by Hansard's favourite novel by Josef Škvorecký from 1975 bearing the same title. Since their mutual rise to prominence after starring in the film Once they now sometimes refer to themselves as "The Swell Season" when performing together.

Forstella Ford

Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Forstella Ford is once again one of the hardest working bands in independent music. Relentless touring and songwriting have left them with a loyal following that spans three continents and with their new lease on life, they show absolutely no sign of slowing down.

Towering drums and driving guitars mark Forstella Ford’s music with a passion and intensity that borders on sonic virtuosity. Melodic and reflective one moment, fierce and raucous the next, Forstella Ford will train the listener’s ear to find new meaning through each listen.

Quietus is one of my favorite albums

Finishing School

Finishing School is the solo project from Sasha Bell of both The Ladybug Transistor and The Essex Green. Many of the members from those bands were also involved in the recording of this album and the influence of those bands can be heard. Sasha still manages to create her own blend of indie pop. Lali Puna

Lali Puna is a band from Weilheim, Germany usually thrown into the music genre of 'indietronic' which at times can sound like Asobi Seksu. The Lali Puna sound is a sophisticated, complex mélange of classic pop motifs, pulsing electronic rhythms, and sleek European styling. Another great band to just relax to.

Hockey Night

Good band that was from the twin cities and broke up back in 2007

“nonstop mind-zap melodies. superhooks and shimmery light-tones. harmonized dual guitars ride atop innertubes. watery vocal jams dripping hooks and glops. giant folk choruses and late evening wood-flutes. fire and echos, blazing over glistening drum shots and slippery hits. then solo becomes eagle-mind soaring above EarthRiver while fizzy throat hums. return to melody.”

They also sound a lot like Pavement. Just think Pavement

While They Slept

So... I was packing up all the stuff in my apartment and ran across this great CD that I thought I had lost. Think a cross between the Goodboy Suit and Murder By Death.
